But First, an Introduction

October marks Women’s History Month in Canada - a month whose purpose is to give Canadians “the opportunity to learn about the important contributions of women and girls to our society – and to the quality of our lives today".

In this blog, twice a week, I will be profiling a woman from history (some more recent than others) who are, or were, “Women of Character, Courage, and Commitment” which is the theme of this year's Women’s History Month in the United States. In Canada, the theme is “Canadian Business Women- A Growing Economic Force.

I have chosen to align more closely with the theme from the US in order to provide a broader overview of different women from different places in different walks of life, rather than focusing exclusively on Canadian Business Women. I hope you will join me as I seek to draw attention to significant women from history and from today and celebrate Women’s History Month.
